I make things that don’t have a form yet. Right now that’s at Foresight, Intuit’s R&D lab, building AI-native software. Before that I was KQED’s first senior producer for voice and AI, making new forms of audio storytelling, and the conversational experiments that became Ask Forum on Discord and the voter guides for smart speakers.
I’m interested in first encounters. What you notice, what you think you’re allowed to ask, and everything the thing has said before you’ve read a word of it.
I have an MFA in filmmaking, in experimental work. It’s a tradition built on pushing on ideas to find new paths and new ways of communicating. It reminds me that to show new ideas, you have to try new ideas.
That interest was reinforced at the Exploratorium, where I spent most of my career. I began making exhibits on the floor and online, back when a museum website winning a Webby was news. Later I led the online engagement group, where we made the Uncovered Series, which reached over a million people, and then founded the museum’s Digital Experience Lab to make new kinds of immersive digital work.
I have been working with language models since well before most people had used one. At KQED I wrote the newsroom’s first AI guidelines and then had to work under them, which is a different experience from doing either one alone.
